Telangana Housing Minister Orders Allocation of 2BHK Houses by May-End

Introduction

The Telangana housing minister, Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, has announced a significant initiative aimed at allocating double-bedroom houses (2BHK) to eligible beneficiaries across the state by the end of May. This directive comes as part of a broader effort to address housing needs and ensure that those in need receive adequate support.

Key Directives and Financial Assistance

During a recent review meeting, Minister Reddy emphasized the urgency of completing houses that are in the final stages of construction. He introduced a financial assistance program under the Indiramma housing scheme, which offers up to 5 lakh for partially constructed houses. This initiative aims to expedite the completion of housing projects and provide beneficiaries with the means to finish construction independently if contractors fail to do so.

Addressing Eligibility and Malpractice Concerns

Concerns regarding ineligible occupants in government housing were raised by several MLAs during the meeting. In response, the minister instructed local collectors to remove ineligible occupants and ensure that houses are allocated to deserving beneficiaries. He highlighted the importance of poverty as the primary criterion for eligibility and warned against malpractice in the payment of 2BHK bills.

Support for Construction and Land Protection

To further support housing construction, the government will provide 40 tonnes of sand free of cost. However, many beneficiaries have expressed a preference for housing closer to urban areas. Minister Reddy also reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting public land and called for strict measures against encroachments, alongside efforts to resolve boundary disputes involving revenue and forest lands.
