Tamil Nadu Government Launches Affordable Housing Scheme for Middle-Income Families

Introduction to the Affordable Housing Initiative

The Tamil Nadu government has recently unveiled an ambitious affordable housing scheme aimed at supporting middle-income families. With an allocation of Rs 8,852 crore to the housing and urban development department in the 2026-27 budget, this initiative is set to transform the housing landscape in the state.

Key Features of the 'My Home' Scheme

Named the 'My Home' scheme, this program will facilitate the construction of one lakh affordable housing units over the next seven years through a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The government has committed Rs 15,000 crore to support this initiative, along with Rs 3,500 crore earmarked as Viability Gap Funding (VGF) to enhance project viability and attract private investment.

Current Developments and Future Plans

Currently, 24,131 affordable housing units are under construction across Tamil Nadu, with plans to commence work on an additional 14,194 units this year. The government is also focusing on redeveloping dilapidated tenements, with an investment of Rs 1,253 crore allocated for this purpose.

Technological Advancements in Urban Development

In addition to housing, the government has announced the establishment of an AI-powered governance platform called SPEED (Single Platform for Efficient Expedited Development). This initiative aims to streamline digital planning permissions, ensuring faster and more transparent processes for urban development.
