Overview of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project

The Dharavi redevelopment project (DRP) in Mumbai is set to undergo significant changes as a few thousand residents will need to relocate to transit or rental accommodations. This decision, announced by Mahendra Kalyankar, CEO of the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), marks a shift from earlier commitments of key-to-key rehabilitation for affected families.

Reasons for Relocation

Kalyankar emphasized that such relocations are common in large urban regeneration projects. The primary goal is to initiate construction and rehabilitation work promptly, ensuring a smooth transition from slum areas to newly developed homes. Recently, eviction notices were issued to residents in Meghwadi-Ganesh Nagar to facilitate essential infrastructure improvements.

Support for Affected Residents

Residents eligible for free housing will receive financial assistance, with amounts varying based on their current living conditions. Those on upper floors are offered Rs 15,000, while others will receive Rs 18,000 as rent support. Additionally, 302 families from Shatabdi Nagar have been relocated to Mhada tenements, which are now classified as transit homes.

Community Concerns and Activism

Activists, such as Raju Korde from the Dharavi Bachao Andolan, have raised concerns about the implications of these relocations. They warn that the transition to rental units could set a precedent that may affect future housing stability for residents. As the project progresses, it remains crucial for the community to stay informed and engaged.
